An armed group disguised as a 'mariachi' musician opened fire indiscriminately at the Plaza Garibaldi in Mexico City, the capital of Mexico.

According to Mexican authorities, as quoted by the AFP news agency, Saturday, September 15, 2018, this shocking incident killed five people and injured eight others, including a foreign national.

The five perpetrators opened fire from rifles and pistols, when Plaza Garibaldi was filled with residents and tourists during the holiday week ahead of the Independence Day celebration on September 16.

The investigation team found 60 bullet casings in the plaza area. The perpetrators were known to flee on three motorbikes.

"There were five people who were killed in the incident at Plaza Garibaldi. Three died at the location, and two women in the hospital," said a prosecutor's office in Mexico City.

Head of Public Security Raymund Collins came to the scene. He considered the shooting was a targeted attack on specific targets.

So far the investigating team has not revealed the motive for the shooting. It was only mentioned that two of the dead had been accused of robbery.

Mexico has been hit by a wave of violence since the government mobilized the military to fight a number of narcotics cartels in 2006.

Since then, more than 200 thousand people have been killed, including a record of 28,702 last year. About 37,000 people were reported missing in a wave of violence across Mexico.
